Air quality monitoring systems, functions of complex systems

The Air Quality Monitoring System (AQMS) is a complex system that combines many functions, and its main objective is to continuously and accurately monitor the various components of the atmosphere in order to assess the quality of the air and to predict changes in it. The system plays a vital role in environmental protection, public health and climate change research.


Types of monitoring: Air quality monitoring systems can monitor a wide range of pollutants including, but not limited to, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), and others. These pollutants have direct or indirect effects on human health, e.g. particulate matter may cause respiratory diseases, while certain gases may aggravate heart disease or asthma attacks.


Monitoring of meteorological conditions: In addition to pollutant concentrations, air quality monitoring systems also collect data on meteorological conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction. These data are necessary for an accurate assessment of air quality because meteorological conditions can affect the dispersion and deposition of pollutants.


The collected data are processed and analysed into an easy-to-understand Air Quality Index (AQI). The public can use this index to understand the current air quality conditions and take appropriate protective measures. In addition, the data will also be used to formulate and adjust environmental policies.


An air quality monitoring system is a complex system which involves a number of disciplines and technical fields. Through this system, we can better understand and manage the atmospheric environment, protect public health and maintain ecological balance.
